The finals of the Inter-IT tournament that happened on Saturday turned out to be a one-sided affair as the team from Capgemini outpaced the well-oiled machinery of the HSBC Global Technologies team to defeat them 2-0. The HSBC team which had worked its way up to the finals by steamrolling opponents throughout the tournament with their fast-paced attacks and rock-solid defence looked a shadow of their former selves as they had a lacklustre appearance. The Capgemini team on the other hand had fought their way up to the final through the league and knock-out rounds and had reached the finals with a determined attitude to win the game. The match began in the usual classic style for HSBC as they began running into the Capgemini defence at regular intervals. However a 8th minute defensive error by HSBC saw Capgemini striker Abhir Basu run through the ranks of the HSBC defence and shoot one past their helpless goalkeeper. While the Capgemini supporters were ecstatic at the fact that they had drawn first blood against a team that was known for their attacking nature of play, the HSBC players could hardly believe that they had been pushed onto the back foot owing to the lapse in their defence.
As the match raced on the HSBC players continued to make repeated runs into the Capgemini goal only to be denied time and again by Rohan Deshmukh, winner of the best goalkeeper award for the tournament.
HSBC’s Arun Sheshadri tried to make the best of the passes given to him by his team mates but they were few and far between and for most of the time he kept running into blind alleys.
The second half that began on a more positive note for the Capgemini team saw Basu continue to harass the defence of the HSBC team to little effect as they had more than made up for their defensive frailties of the first half by not allowing the Capgeminians close to their goal. A 47 th minute solo run from Basu however saw him break free of the defence of the likes of Abhijit Kavendra and run a solo to score a second goal past the HSBC keeper. The team that had come to the finals with a sure shot chance of winning the tournament was looking like a second division team as they were behind by two goals to none.
Through the last ten minutes of the game, both teams were trying hard to save the game for themselves- Capgemini shielding their goal from an HSBC onslaught, and HSBC trying hard to take the match into extra time. However as the final whistle blew it was HSBC who was on the side that finished second much to the chagrin of their supporters and delight of the Capgemini supporters.
