Class 12 students with learning disorders like dyslexia and physical handicaps will be awarded 20 grace marks in the board exams, starting this year.
The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE),headquartered in the city, had moved a proposal to the state government on the issue.
The state government, while accepting the proposal, has come out with a resolution to this effect on February 24.
This means, dyslexic and physically handicapped students will have to score at least 15 marks out of 100 to pass in that subject,as with the 20 grace marks he/she can secure the 35 marks required for passing.
The privilege, however, will be given only for passing, said Vijaysheela Sardesai, chairperson of MSBSHSE.
That means those who pass without the help of grace marks will not get these 20 marks that can improve overall scoring, she said.
The students will be required to submit a certificate proving their disabilities.
It should also be ratified by the principal. Unless it is submitted, grace marks cannot be allotted, said T N Supe, secretary of the board.
The practice granting 20 grace marks to differently-abled students is already available for SSC students. There was a strong demand that the facility should be extended to the HSC students too. A petition was also filed in the Bombay High Court regarding the issue.
An expert committee was constituted as per the High Court order on the issue. The committee submitted its recommendations to the executive council of the MSBSHSE.
As per the recommendations, the board forwarded the proposal to the state government.
