Giripremi mountaineers install Shivaji statue at Everest base camp

This marks the beginning of Project Shivaji,an initiative to acknowledge the Sherpa community staying in and around the Everest base camp.

In their final leg of events before the actual climb to Mount Everest,Giripremi mountaineers installed Shivaji Maharaj’s statue in Gorkshep (17,000 feet),the base camp of the Mount Everest,on Sunday afternoon. This marks the beginning of Project Shivaji,an initiative to acknowledge the Sherpa community staying in and around the Everest base camp.

Pasang Sherpa,owner of Hotel Himalaya,at the Everest base camp has allotted space in his hotel for the installation of the statue. Wangchu Sherpa,president,Everest Summitters Association,unveiled the statue made by city-based Dinkar and Dipak Thopte.

Undertaking an expedition to the world’s highest peak is impossible without the help of local Sherpas.

“The Sherpas live in adverse conditions. We want to acknowledge their efforts and help them lead a better life,” said Umesh Zirpe,tax consultant and team leader of the Mount Everest expedition. Giripremi has earmarked Rs 2 lakh for Project Shivaji which will be utilised to donate 30 solar lanterns to Sherpa households.

On January 21,historian Babasaheb Purandare presented a 2.25-foot metal statue of Shivaji to team Everest. Giripremi has tied up with Nepal’s Everest Summiteers Association to continue the voluntary work even after the expedition.
