Get facilities to treat sewage: pollution control board to cantonments

In a bid to check pollution of rivers, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board has asked the cantonment boards in Pune to put in place adequate sewage treatment facilities.

In a bid to check pollution of rivers, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has asked the cantonment boards in Pune to put in place adequate sewage treatment facilities. It has also advised them to use the treated water for its gardens and plants, and not to release it into rivers.

MPCB regional officer PK Mirashe said the directive followed the growing concern over the rise in contamination of Bhima river and its tributaries — Mula and Mutha. “We have asked the cantonment boards to upgrade their sewage treatment facilities, and to use the treated water in their gardens and for plantation purposes.”

The Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB) officials, however, cited difficulties in arranging funds to comply with the two-month-old directive. “We have two treatment facilities in the cantonment area and we release the treated water into our burial ground. It will be difficult to arrange vehicles to use the treated water in our gardens,” executive engineer Arun Godbole said.

As per estimates, the Khadki Cantonment generates six MLD sewage,Dehu Road Cantonment 8.2 MLD and Pune Cantonment 8 MLD. The Khadki Cantonment has two treatment facilities of 9.2 MLD capacity while the Pune Cantonment uses the treatment facility of the Pune Municipal Corporation. The Dehu Road Cantonment has no treatment facilities. DCB spokesman NM Mahajani said they had plans to install them.

Pune Cantonment Board member Manzoor Nazir Shaikh, however, said the members had asked the cantonment board to set up its own treatment facility. “Though new drainage lines were laid a long time ago, they are not being used,” a PCB official said.
