Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday said garbage segregation, disposal and treatment should be taken up area wise instead of being done on one open dumping ground.
Pawar urged the PMC to take care of its own garbage at the local level and not take it to fringe villages. Urali Devachi and Phursungi villagers agitate every time they face a problem because of the citys garbage. The state and Central governments will help the PMC set up more bio-gas projects in the city as fringe villages are not ready to allocate their land for garbage processing units, said Pawar.
Pawar said Thane Municipal Commissioner R A Rajeev, along with former chief secretary Ratnakar Gaikwad, had developed a model where treatment of garbage generated power. Similar such initiatives should be carried out at all levels,he said. Pawar assured that funds will be sought from the Centre and state.
Decentralising the treatment process is the answer to the garbage problem. We also have to look for innovative answers to tackle this problem, said Pawar. He said at the city level there are biogas plants while at the rural level there would be grazing land allocated for such purpose. Existing funds allocated are Rs 68 lakh for rural areas while Rs 15 lakh for city areas and Pawar has asked the DPDC to allocate funds for the same.
