On January 19, just four days after Makar Sankranti, while walking on the road, Rushikesh Kulkarni (13) was injured after his legs got entangled in a kite string. Little did he know that a freak accident would leave him immobile for months, for the kite string broke his sensory and tendon nerves.

The cut caused by the kite string , was so deep that the boy had to be operated the very next day. However, he is yet to walk on his own. Reacting to the accident, Prajakta Kulkarni, his mother said, “My son had gone to his friends’ house and while returning, his right leg got stuck in the string of the kite, which another young boy was flying nearby. Before my son could remove the string from his leg, the boy started pulling the string and continued to do so with force. This caused a deep injury on his leg.”

According to Prajakta, when people heard her son’s cries, they rushed to help him and sought parents’ mobile number. They also tied a scarf to his injury, which stopped the bleeding to some extent.

When the child was taken to the doctor, the family was informed that the injury will require an immediate surgery as the string had caused nearly 1.5-inch deep cut and had broken his sensory and tendon nerves. The couple spent almost Rs 1 lakh on the surgery. While the surgery was successful, the family has been told that it will take nearly six months for the wound to heal completely. “Rushikesh has been advised complete bed rest and can’t go to school. In February, he had his final exams for which he prepared at home. Fortunately, the school had a medical room on the ground floor, where he could sit on the bed keeping his leg straight and take the exam,” said the mother, a resident of Karve Nagar. Rushikesh is a Class 8 student of Sinhagad Springdale School. Since last week, he has been undergoing physiotherapy sessions and has been asked to use a walker. “However, he cannot stand for long as his feet starts paining,” said the mother.

“Every one knows that the use of kite string is harmful, no action has been taken to tackle its use,” said the mother, adding that adding that despite knowing that their son and the family has been suffering for no fault of theirs, they couldn’t complain to anyone.
