First paediatric liver transplant in city performed at KEM hospital
The child received part of the liver from his mother.

Three-year-old Mayuresh who was suffering from Budd Chiari syndrome — a rare disease that destroyed his liver — has undergone a liver transplant at KEM hospital. According to doctors, this was the first paediatric liver transplant in the city where the child received part of the liver from his mother.
At a press conference on Thursday, Dr S S Bhalerao and Dr Shashank Shrotriya said that the Zujam family hailed from Rajgurunagar and fortunately for the child, his mother’s blood group was O+ve — a universal donor. Sayali, mother of Mayuresh, underwent extensive medical investigations but the cost factor at various hospitals eventually brought them to KEM hospital.
A part of the left lobe of the mother’s liver was removed preserving all blood vessels and bile duct. Simultaneously, Mayuresh underwent an operation where his entire liver was removed. Later in the day, the part of his mother’s liver was reimplanted in Mayuresh. This meant a very delicate joining of blood vessels to each other and joining the 1mm wide bile duct to the intestines.
