Baramati farmer dies by suicide, records act on camera

Pune Rural Police identified the deceased as Hanumant Sanas, a resident of Late village in Baramati.A 70-YEAR-OLD farmer from Baramati taluka in Pune district allegedly committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance and recorded the act on a mobile phone camera after he blamed neighbouring farmers, with whom he had a dispute, and also the police and irrigation department.
Pune Rural Police identified the deceased as Hanumant Sanas, a resident of Late village in Baramati. Police said that Sanas allegedly consumed poison on April 13 after recording a video on his phone. He was later admitted to a hospital where his health deteriorated on Sunday and he passed away on Monday.
In the video recorded by him which was shared by his family and was later circulated on social media, Sanas is heard saying that he had filed an application with the police and irrigation department in February about a dispute he was having with neighbouring farmers. In the video he said these farmers, the police and the irrigation department were pressuring him and that he was ending his life as a result of it.
When contacted, Pankaj Deshmukh, Superintendent of Police of Pune Rural jurisdiction said, “The deceased farmer owned land in his village along Neera river. He had a dispute with some neighbouring farmers over the place and access to a power distribution point used for pumping water. In this regard he had filed an application with the local police and irrigation department. During our inquiry, he had been called to the police station. A probe has been launched into the alleged suicide and a case has been registered under provisions for abetment of suicide.”
When asked about the allegations against the police, Deshmukh said, “An inquiry will also be conducted into these allegations and necessary action will be initiated.” Additional Superintendent of Police (Baramati Division) Sanjay Jadhav said, “A case of abetment to commit suicide has been registered against five farmers with whom he had the dispute. Three of them have been placed under arrest.”
