Education board U-turn: Due to ongoing court case, can’t penalise erring schools

Education officers in all 15wards were asked to visit schools and ensure compliance of RTE admissions or face strict action.

Pune Municipal Corporation, PMC education board, EWS quota, RTE admissions, Bombay high court, Pune news On July 21, the PMC education board officials issued a statement that the deadline had been extended to July 28 and that those parents who had complaints should approach the RTE cell by July 22.

In a span of 48 hours, 257 parents have come knocking on the door of the RTE cell at Pune Municipal Corporation’s education board to help get their students admitted to schools under the EWS quota. However, taking a complete U-turn from it’s earlier issued statement, officials at the PMC education board said they would not take any action against erring schools.

These parents who belong to the economically weaker sections of society have complained that though their children have been allotted admissions under Round I of the RTE admissions, the schools have refused to confirm the admissions, citing various reasons, including the ongoing court case on RTE admissions in the Bombay High Court.

However, while hearing the case, the bench of judges had directed the government to resume RTE admissions and the state education department had issued a circular to all schools in the state to complete the first round of admissions by July 21.

However, on Thursday, when Newsline asked PMC education officer B K Dahiphale on what he planned to do with the 258 complaints, he said they would appeal to schools but won’t be able to force them as they would cite the ongoing court case. “Since the order is expected this week, we will wait for the judgment and act accordingly. Till then, parents can keep lodging their complaints with us,” he said.
