The two students involved in Wednesday's dispute that took a violent turn at DY Patil Engineering College, a video of which went viral on Thursday, had earlier too been involved in a fight in college. On Thursday, May 9, a video from the previous day surfaced wherein some individuals could be seen brandishing a machete and sticks on the campus of DY Patil College of Engineering in Charholi. Subsequently, an FIR was lodged and four students along with two outsiders were booked. "Two third year students had had a tiff over a petty issue which led to this escalation," said Ajeenkya DY Patil, president of Ajeenkya DY Patil University located in Lohegaon. The university itself is investigating the matter and the two students have been expelled pending inquiry. “Apparently, a few days back, there was a fight between the two boys. Our team members had intervened and managed to calm them down," he said, adding, "It was a minor fight but it escalated into an extremely violent brawl on Wednesday and we are deeply shocked and disappointed at this turn of events. We are investigating the matter thoroughly and have taken appropriate measures.” The university plans to tighten security measures and hold counseling programmes about peaceful conflict resolution for students.
