The provisional merit list for the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) rounds for admission to engineering and technology degree courses for 2013-2014 has been released by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE),without considering applications from candidates, who have benefited from the directorates decision to take Chemistry as an optional subject in Class XII for taking part in CAP.
The move has not gone down well with the affected students and their parents, who apprehend educational loss as a result of DTEs decision to ignore them, while displaying provisional merit list, which was released on Sunday.
Moreover, stakeholders are also wondering whether inclusion of these students at later stages of the CAP would cause drastic changes in the overall merit list.
Candidates who have passed the Class XII examination, with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of the Chemistry/Bio-technology/Biology/Technical Vocational subject, can also take part in this years CAP.
Earlier, candidates clearing the Class XII examination, with subjects English,Physics,Chemistry and Mathematics, could only claim for admissions to engineering and technology degree courses.
DTE has decided to make Chemistry subject optional at Class XII pursuant to and in terms of interim order, dated June 12,passed by the Aurangabad bench of Bombay High Court, and it was not voluntary decision by the Directorate. Thus,it should give due consideration to students benefiting from the court order, educational activist and career counsellor Vivek Velankar said. While the exact number of affected students could not be ascertained,DTE authorities said care would be taken that these students do not suffer any loss. These students had applied for the engineering CAP during a brief period of June 14 to 15.
It is accepted that candidates benefiting from the revised rule (to make Chemistry subject optional at Class XII) have not figured in provisional merit list for CAP. These students need to contact application receipt centres (ARCs) during grievance period till June 18 to know their merit number, DTEs officiating Pune region director,P V Sarode told Newsline on Monday, downplaying any threat to allotment of seats to CAP candidates at large as per their merit due to addition of these candidates.
CAP booklet fails to reach students
DTE authorities have failed to make available candidates booklet, containing college details like courses offered and intake capacity for each branch, despite the fact that online submission of option form for mock allotment of CAP Round-I began on Monday. When contacted, authorities said these booklets could not reach students on time due to some unavoidable reasons. The online submission of option form for mock allotment will take place till June 19. Authorities said booklets were dispatched to ARCs by Monday evening and would be distributed to students from Tuesday.
