Drug peddler wanted in Mephedrone case dies as cops try to arrest him

An alleged drug peddler became unconscious and died while police were trying to nab him in Kondhwa area of Pune city, late evening on Friday. Police identified the deceased as Azim Abu Salem alias Azim Khan (51), resident of Mira Bhayandar in Thane district.

Police said Azim is a history sheeter, who was earlier booked in cases of drugs smuggling. This time, a team of Mira Bhayandar police who had been searching for Azim in connection with a Mephedrone seizure case lodged at the Kashigaon police station.

After searching for him in Ratnagiri and Kolhapur district, the police team reached Pune. Cops received information that he had been hiding in an apartment at Kausar Baug in Kondhwa area.

The Mira Bhayandar police then sought help from Kondhwa police station in Pune. Around 7.30 pm on Friday, the police teams then reached the apartment where the accused was hiding.

Police knocked on the door of the apartment multiple times, but there was no response. So the cops broke into the apartment and tried to nab him. However, he allegedly bit a policeman’s chest. As the cops pushed him away, he became unconscious all of a sudden and collapsed on the floor.

Senior police inspector Kumar Ghadge told media persons that the accused was rushed to Sassoon hospital, where the doctors pronounced him dead. Then, as per procedure, an accidental death report was lodged at Kondhwa police station and an inquiry was initiated to confirm the cause behind the death.
