Pressing for the need of a provision to cancel driving licences of those who drink and drive,State Home Minister R R Patil said the state has approached the Centre with the proposal. He also called for a more stringent process for issuing driving licences.

Patil was speaking at the concluding ceremony of 15-day Maharashtra State Road Safety Campaign,2011,at the Pune rural police headquarters. The campaign was held across the state from January 1 to 15. “Over 12,000 person die in road accidents and over 25,000 get permanent disabilities, making road accidents the most serious challenge before us.”

He said the state was in the process of framing a rule to cancel licences of drink drivers and it was expected to come into effect soon. “In spite of registering 57,000 cases against drink drivers last year, over 8,000 people were found doing the same on New Year’s eve.”

Patil said,“Putting together the efforts of all agencies and stakeholders in ensuring safety on roads,we succeeded in bringing down the number of accidents in first 15 days of this year by 189. It is important that all these agencies continue to work the same way throughout the year.” He said India has 1 per cent of the total vehicles in the world but is home to six per cent of the accidents.
