DPU Private Super Specialty Hospital in Pimpri, Pune, successfully performed an awake ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation—artificial lung) bridge to lung transplant.
The patient, a 40-year-old woman, had post-Covid lung fibrosis and had been on oxygen support for two years at home.
She had developed spontaneous pneumothorax on the left side of her chest due to the rupture of one of the lung cysts, worsening her condition. Due to her severe respiratory failure even with ventilator support, she was referred to DPU Private Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, Pune, for a lung transplant.
The feat was performed by a team of doctors led by Dr. Anurag Garg, HoD, CVTS and Dr. Prashant Sakhwalkar, the In-Charge of Critical Care Medicine, both from DPU Private Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, Pune.
