A 21-year-old newly wed woman was allegedly murdered by in-laws for dowry in Khadki-Pimpalgaon village in Manchar taluka of the district. The body of the deceased,identified by Manchar police as Kalpana Pokharkar,was found in a well near her home five days after she went missing.
On Saturday,police arrested her husband Nitin (24),father-in-law Suryakant,brother-in-law Ratanbai and Nitins uncle Jaysingh Wayal after Kalpanas father Bhagwan Rode registered a complaint. Police have also booked Nitins mother.
S R Kale,sub-inspector with Manchal police,said,Nitin and Kalpana got married on May 15 this year. Nitins family had taken dowry. They were demanding more gold and cash. The complaint states they used to physically and mentally harass her. Nitin is a farmer.
Two months ago,Kalpanas father paid a visit to her house to plead with her in-laws but they were adamant on their demand,police said. On Tuesday Nitins family registered a missing complaint at Manchar police. The body was located in a well near the house on Saturday. There are injury marks on the body. We are yet to get the autopsy report.
The five have been booked under Section 302 for murder and 304 B (dowry death (IPC) after subjecting to cruelty or harassment by husband or any relative of her husband in connection with,any demand for dowry) and Section 498 for subjecting Kalpana to cruelty.
In another case a 25-year-old woman,Manisha,was set on fire in Warje on Saturday allegedly by her in-laws after she refused to bring Rs 50,000 from her parents for a bike. The victim has 57 per cent burns and her condition is stated to be critical.
Police have arrested her husband Sunil Salunkhe (25),mother-in-law Malan,two others Sachin Salunkhe and Nitin Salunkhe.
