A dispute over a dog owned a by a man charging towards a resident in Hadapsar on Wednesday evening turned violent, leading to the murder of a 22-year-old man who tried to intervene in the fight. Five others persons including two women, were also injured in the clash.
The incident took place in Davarinagar, predominantly a low-income locality in Hadapsar. The deceased has been identified as Sagar Namdeo Chaugule, a resident of Davarinagar.
According to Hadapsar police, the dispute began after a dog owned by Ganesh Wable, charged on another resident of the same area, Nilesh Shinde, when the latter was walking past Wable’s house at 5.30 pm.
Sub inspector S N Deshmane of Hadapsar police station said: “After Wable’s dog charged on Shinde, they had a heated argument in which they hurled abuses at each other.”
“Holding a grudge against Shinde over this dispute, Wable along with 10 to 12 others went to Shinde’s locality at around 11 pm. Upon seeing Shinde with his relatives and neighbours, Wable and his men attacked them with wooden sticks,” police said.
According to police, Sagar Chaugule, who was Shinde’s neighbour, tried to intervene in the fight but was brutally hit on the head. He collapsed because of a severe head injury. The attackers also hit Shinde, his relatives, Sandeep and Kesarabai and neighbours, Sunny Chaugule, Shakuntala Sawant.
Chaugule was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Based on the FIR filed by Shinde, Hadapsar police on Thursday arrested Wable and his accomplices Pradeep Karpe, Gorakh Londhe and two others. Search for more suspects are on.
Senior inspector Vishnu Pawar of Hadapsar police station said, “As far as we know, none of the suspects have any history of crime or disputes. It happened over a petty issue, which led to loss of a life.”
