After facing shortage of funds that even put on hold its major developmental plans,Dehu Road Cantonment Board (DRCB) Thursday approved a major repair work of nearly one-third of total road length under its area. We have approved a major repair work proposal, said N M Mahajani, spokesperson,DRCB. After a cantonment board meeting yesterday, the proposals for repair of the existing road network as well as laying of water pipes were approved. For the repair work of nearly 13-km road length, the board has approved Rs 1.5 crore. Earlier,we were only carrying out minor repairs of the roads and due to the paucity of funds we have not been able to carry out major repair works. Now,we have decided to go ahead with the plans to repair the roads in a major way, Mahajani said. The repair works will be carried out in all the seven wards of the board and each ward member will be given nearly Rs 20 lakh for it. We have been seeking road repairs for a long time, but due to the funds crunch they couldnt be taken up, said Sanjay Pinjan,vice-president,DRCB. The DRCB officials said they have received a number of complaints from the people regarding potholed roads. The road repair works will be done in the village areas also at the Dehu Road bazar, Mahajani said. He,however, added presently there was no proposal to construct fresh roads. The proposal for the road repairs was discussed earlier this month at a DRCBs finance committee meeting where the members had decided to take the approval of the board president and other members. The finance committee had already approved the road repair works and the bids were cleared after all the members agreed on the matter in yesterdays meeting, Pinjan said. Sanjay Raut,a DRCB member, said,I have got Rs 22 lakh for the road repair works in my ward. The funds paucity has been hitting development, though despite that I had recently got the roads at the Thomas Colony repaired.
