Dedicated hostel for girls to come up on Deccan College campus

Students of both govt and pvt institutes can avail facility; 8 more planned in other parts of state.

The Deccan College of Pune has been selected by the government to establish a dedicated hostel for girls. The proposed hostel, with a capacity of 320 students, has a financial outlay of Rs 13.5 crore that has already been sanctioned by the government.

The initiative, which is part of a government scheme to check drop-out rate among girl students in higher education, also aims to set up dedicated hostel facilities for students in Mumbai and seven other towns in Maharashtra, besides Pune. These are Aurangabad,Jalgaon,Nanded,Solapur,Panvel,Gadchiroli and Jalana, having cumulative intake of around 1,770 seats.

“Girl students from private institutions of higher learning can also avail the facilities, along with those pursuing studies in government institutes. The detailed guidelines to this effect will be released shortly,” a senior official told Newsline.

He said the government was also expanding hostel facilities for female students with five hostels being set up — one each in Kolhapur,Aurangabad and Amravati and two in Nagpur.

Towards materialising its scheme of increasing girls’ enrollment ratio in higher education, the state government has also approved as many as 171 posts of rectors and other supporting staff for the proposed hostels.

The state government has asked the offices concerned of the joint director (higher education) to submit at the earliest proposals to raise and expand hostel facilities along with rough estimate.

“Scores of girl students give up higher studies due to the absence of safe and proper accommodation at the place of their study. This was found to be a major hurdle in improving their enrollment ratio in higher education. Our scheme of providing dedicated hostel facilities for girls will surely overcome this problem,” an official said.
