Death of girl in SOS Balgram: Two arrested,hunt on for third suspect

Investigation revealed that Gite complained of illness around 10 am on August 1.

The police have arrested two women at Balgram SOS Children’s Village in Yerawada in connection with the mysterious death of seven-year-old girl Kalyani Anil Gite in August this year. Police said they would arrest the third suspect soon. An offence of negligence has been registered against the three suspects in the case.

The police have identified the suspects as Sukhada Ramchandra Dandekar (57),a Griha Mata,and Vandana Balu Pote (40),a nurse at the observation home. Police said they will arrest Priti Manish Gavande (23),a counsellor at SOS Balgram,soon.

A native of Newasa in Ahmednagar district,Gite was also a witness in a case which involved the death of her mother a year ago. Taking this into account,Police initiated proper investigation considering different possibilities to confirm the cause of her death and whether there were any lapses.

Investigation revealed that Gite complained of illness around 10 am on August 1. The three suspects responsible for health and education of children at SOS Balgram allegedly failed to take her to the hospital immediately. They took her to a hospital far from Balgram,causing a delay in providing her treatment. A complaint was lodged by Assistant Police Inspector Shivaji Bandare who is also the investigation officer in the case.

“We have booked the suspects under Section 304 (a) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 23 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act,2000. We arrested Dandekar and Pote on Wednesday. Gavande will also be arrested,” the officer said.

Gite and her younger brother were brought to SOS Balgram about two months before her death. Gite had also started going to a school. After her death,Amarjyoti Sharma,director of the observation home,had told media that she was immediately examined by a house doctor,who also gave her medicines. She again complained of body ache around 4.30 pm. She was rushed to KEM Hospital,were she was declared dead. Her post-mortem was conducted at Sassoon General Hospital,added Sharma.
