Lieutenant General Rajiv Chaudhry, Director General Border Roads, said on Saturday in Pune that the Border Road Organisation (BRO) is pushing for speedy infrastructure development to strengthen the security matrix along northern borders.
Lt Gen Chaudhry was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the ‘Chief Engineers and Equipment Management Conference’ organised by the BRO in Pune between May 5 and 7. The annual conference enables the BRO to prepare a road map for the next working season and gives opportunities for sharing knowledge of good practices and capacity building, officials said.
During interaction with the press, when asked about infrastructure development along the Line of Actual Control along China border, Lt Gen Chaudhry said, “Over the last five years, we have constructed roads along 6,500 km in these areas. As we speak work is underway for construction of around 6,100 km of roads. The pace at which we are building roads in this region has also increased one and half times. In the last five years, we have built bridges of length of around 15,000 metres. And this is three times the length of bridges constructed in the previous five years. So, there is a significant increase in road building, bridging and tunneling activity. We are also nearing completion of ongoing work at two strategically significant airfields in the Eastern Sector, Bagdogra and Barrackpore. The government has also sanctioned work on Nyoma airfield (in Ladakh), which will be one of the highest airfields in the world at 14,000 feet. Work will begin this working season.”
The conference, which is also being attended by industry representatives, comprises deliberations on key issues focusing on use of new technologies, incorporation of environment-friendly construction practices, road-safety aspects and other HR initiatives, including efforts to upgrade facilities for labourers.
