City to get RAF team in a month

With an eye on improving the security measures in the city,two teams of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) comprising 26 commandos will get down to work within a month in the city.

With an eye on improving the security measures in the city,two teams of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) comprising 26 commandos will get down to work within a month in the city,said Minister of State for Home Satej Patil who has recently taken charge in the Prithviraj Chavan cabinet.

The MLA from Kolhapur further assured to improve security in the state along with chalking out a detailed plan for it. He said improving and strengthening equipment used by the police force will be the top most priority.

Elaborating on the need for such teams,Patil said there would be 38 such groups in the state. These teams have been trained to rush to any spot witnessing a security threat. The commandos in this team will be paid almost 60 per cent more than the usual force and will be given adequate equipment. This would be over and above the Force One team which has more than 200 commandos and who are being trained on the lines of National Security Guard (NSG).

He said the government will give all the equipment required for the team. “We will make sure that there is no shortage of equipment and required funds will be allocated for this team,” said the minister.

Besides Pune,Nagpur and Thane will have two teams,Mumbai will have 26 teams,while Navi Mumbai,Solapur,Aurangabad,Amravati will have one each. Patil also stressed on modernisation of equipment. Although there were committees in 2008 and 2009,there is a current allocation of Rs 425 crore for strengthening and modernisation of equipment for the police force. He said Rs 200 crore have been allocated for modernisation of the department of which Rs 92 crore have been utilised and the remaining will be sanctioned soon.

For Mumbai,there are several police stations planned in port areas,barracks and check posts too are part of the plan after the 26/11 attacks,said Patil. He said there has been an order of 2,000 bullet resistant jackets while only 700 have been allotted.
