This Diwali the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has so far successfully implemented the reservation for everyone scheme and bus operations have been smooth barring some commotion caused due to hordes of last-minute commuters walking in without booking tickets, resulting in chaos at the bus stations.
Tens of thousand of migrants working in the city leave for their native places during Diwali. The Pune division of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) started its Diwali traffic plans from October 21 with extra buses on each route to deal with the rush.
By Monday evening 323 extra buses were plied from Shivajinagar,360 from COEP grounds and 450 extra buses were released from the Swargate station.
People travelling to nearby places such as Kolhapur,Ahmednagar,Satara etc do not book tickets and that is the reason for the commotion, said Vijaykumar Diwate, depot manager,Swargate.
But the state transport managed the crowd by plying extra buses especially for those who hadnt booked their tickets.
We have learnt from our last years experience. Though we try to give reservation to as many people as possible. There are a large number of people who turn up without any reservations. We are plying extra unreserved buses for such people, said an officer Vilas Patil
The depots have also borrowed buses from rural bus depot in the district. About 40 buses have been borrowed and have been kept on stand by to use them if needed, said Patil.
On Saturday and Sunday there was huge rush at all the ST stations in the city. The rush somewhat subdued on Monday as it was a working day. The depot officials are expecting a heavy flux on Tuesday.
