The state government has directed the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to prepare a detailed project report for a road from Chandni Chowk to Jambhulwadi, in a move that will tackle traffic congestion along the stretch on the Bangalore-Mumbai bypass.
At a high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday with officials of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and PMRDA, discussions were held on traffic congestion along the stretch.
When this stretch was first built, it lay outside the city’s limits, but due to urbanisation, it has become part of the city and now sees local traffic.

NHAI has planned an elevated road from Narhe to Somatne Phata along the bypass. The district administration also plans to divert traffic on the stretch via an alternate road that connects to the proposed Pune ring road. “The Deputy Chief Minister has asked to plan an alternate road that will start from Chandni Chowk, move away from the city limits and connect with Jambhulwadi village,” said a PMRDA officer, adding the DPR for the proposed work will be prepared in a month according to directions.
Pawar instructed PMC to begin talks with land owners to acquire land for the proposed road project so that work can be taken up as early as possible. At present, NHAI and PMC have taken up work to widen the existing bypass and the service road which includes a bridge on Mutha river.
He also asked the PMRDA to work on developing roads from Jain Hostel Bakori Phata to Bakori Road, Wagholi to Kesnand, and Wagholi to Avhalwadi. “Due to increasing urbanisation, traffic congestion in Pune city is rising. All departments should work in coordination,” said Pawar.
The roads from Bakori to Kesnand and Wagholi to Avhalwadi fall under the jurisdiction of the state Public Works Department but considering the inconvenience faced by citizens, the Deputy Chief Minister instructed the PMRDA to immediately undertake the construction of these roads.
