Pune Police and the Maharashtra State Prison Administration have launched separate probes after a cell phone was found hidden in a bathroom inside the high security Yerawada Central Prison. Police officials said that around 6 pm on April 1, a routine search of the prison premises was conducted. While searching a bathroom in Circle Number 1 of the prison, the jail officials found a cell phone. "The battery of the phone was discharged and there was no SIM card in the phone. It is not a smartphone. We have launched a probe. We will be taking recording statements of the concerned officials and staff." said a police officer. An investigation in this regard has now been initiated by the Yerawada Police station after the Prison administration approached them on Monday. Meanwhile, an internal inquiry has been ordered by the senior officials of the Prison Department. In 2013 and 2016, multiple cell phones were found inside Yerawada Central Prison leading to the jail administration tightening security procedures.
