The Pune city police have arrested a man for allegedly driving a car at high speed under the influence of alcohol and knocking down multiple vehicles and people near the Z-bridge on Friday night. Vishwanath Ramchandra Rajopadhyay (60), of Narayan Peth, died and four others were injured in the incident. The police identified the accused as Umesh Hanumant Waghmare (48), a resident of the Kudale Patil Complex in Manikbag on Sinhagad Road. The FIR in the case was registered at the Vishrambag police station by Ganesh Nakati (48), who was carrying three passengers in his autorickshaw from Kothrud. Around 10.15 pm, a car collided with a two-wheeler ahead of the autorickshaw on the road near Z-bridge. The car further rammed into the autorickshaw and went on to hit a few more vehicles and pedestrians before colliding with an electricity pole. Sub-inspector Priyanka Nikam said Rajopadhyay was on the two-wheeler and that Waghmare was drunk at the time of the accident. A friend of Waghmare's was also in the car, he added. “Four others including the complainant Nakati were injured. Further investigations are on,” said Nikam. The police have booked Waghmare and his friend for rash driving and causing death by negligence under sections 279, 304A, 337, 338 and 427 of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. 14-year-old boy killed in road accident in Manjari A speeding dumper truck knocked down a two-wheeler, killing a 14-year-old boy, near the Manjari railway overbridge on Thursday evening. The Hadapsar police identified the deceased as Rehan Ajiz Khan, a resident of Vandai Apartments in Manjari and son of Ajiz Hafiz Khan. Ajiz’s elder son Ujaif was riding the two-wheeler with Rehan riding pillion when the speeding dumper truck dashed their vehicle around 5 pm. Ujaif was injured and admitted to hospital for treatment. The police have booked the dumper truck’s driver, Dhaneshwarkumar Mahato, a native of Jharkhand, under sections 279, 337 and 304A of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
