Bypoll campaign ends, all eyes on Oct 13

The election campaign for the Khadakwasla Assembly bypoll came to an end on Tuesday evening.

The election campaign for the Khadakwasla Assembly bypoll came to an end on Tuesday evening. The campaign witnessed a verbal duel between the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance and the NCP. Both groups left no stone unturned in a bid to bag the seat, which is important for the NCP as it falls in Baramati Lok Sabha constituency represented by Supriya Sule, daughter of NCP chief Sharad Pawar. The poll will be on October 13

The bypoll holds importance for all political parties in some way or the other as evident during the campaign. The MNS had held the Assembly seat. The bypoll was necessitated by the death of MNS MLA Ramesh Wanjale. His wife Harshada Wanjale opted to contest as an NCP candidate. The MNS criticised the NCP for “snatching Harshada Wanjale” but made an impression by not fielding any candidate against her saying it was a mark of respect for the departed MLA.

For the NCP,the bypoll is important as the party has only one Assembly seat in its kitty out of the six in Baramati Lok Sabha constituency. The party had managed to convince Harshada to contest on an NCP ticket.

Though sympathy votes are in Harshada’s favour, the NCP has not taken the bypoll lightly and has been campaigning extensively. This was to avoid a repeat of the Assembly polls when the MNS won defeating an NCP candidate.

The campaign was led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and senior ministers R R Patil,Chhagan Bhujbal,Babanrao Pachpute,Laxman Dhoble particpated in the campaign. MP Supriya Sule too campaigned for Harshada.

“Ramesh Wanjale was a close associate of NCP and had sought a party ticket for the last Assembly polls. We are fortunate to get his wife to contest on our side,” said Pawar during the campaign.

The Shiv Sena-BJP are going to voters for the first time after joining hands with the RPI. BJP candidate Bhimrao Tapkir is contesting as the alliance candidate.

“The bypoll would not a make a big difference in strength in the Assembly, but the Shiv Sena-BJP-RPI alliance should defeat ruling Congress-NCP in the bypoll,” said BJP leader Gopinath Munde.
