Bopdev ghat gangrape: Second accused arrested from Uttar Pradesh

Around 11 pm, three men came to the spot on their bikes and allegedly threatened them with sharp weapons and robbed their valuables. Police said the accused men tied the woman’s friend with his shirt and belt, dragged the woman to an isolated area and raped her.

An FIR in this case was lodged. Police had last week arrested an accused in the case identified as Chandrakumar Raviprasad Kanojiya (20), a native of Dindori in Madhya Pradesh (MP), in the case. A court remanded him to police custody till October 15.

The accused in this case were identified following a meticulous analysis of hundreds of CCTV videos. Police had also prepared sketches of two suspects based on the description given by the victim woman.

Police said that CCTVs at a petrol pump and a hotel provided clear images of the accused persons. A probe revealed that all three of the accused in the rape case had been arrested in theft cases that took place outside Pune in the past.

After gathering details of the previous criminal cases, police discovered that all three accused did not return home after October 4. They found this suspicious, and probed their phone call details as well as gathered information from people they knew. Crime branch sleuths traced down and arrested Kanojiya at Undri around 4 am on Friday. Police said he matched the sketch of the suspect 90 per cent.

During the search for two more accused, police found that one of them had fled to Nagpur after the gangrape FIR was lodged. He further fled to UP and was on the run but was nabbed by cops.
