The body of three-year-old Tejas Raju Sonar, one of the four children hurled into a canal in Gultekdi by moneylender Sangita Vilas Kivde,40,on Thursday evening after the parents of three of them failed to repay loans, was found floating in the canal near Shindewadi in Hadapsar on Sunday morning.
Fire officer Shivaji Chavan said,We got a call from a local resident around 9.35 am. We found the body in the canal at Shindewadi near Hadapsar Industrial Estate.
The police said Section 302 of the IPC (murder) had been invoked against Kivde. They suspect that she also had a grudge against the boys parents for not letting her adopt one of the kids. Senior inspector Rajkumar Gaikwad of Swargate police said,The accused has three daughters and wished she had a son. These boys were regular visitors to her house. She had asked the boys’ parents to let her adopt one of them and they had refused to do so. We suspect this could have been another motive for the crime.”
Three of the children — Rohit Mizar (9),younger brother Rahul (8) and their cousin Anmol Mizar (5) — were rescued by the local residents. Tejas could not be traced despite hours of search by the fire brigade. On Thursday evening,Kivde and daughter Surekha had taken the boys to the canal, where she started hurling them one by one into the water. Surekha had reportedly tried to stop her. One of the boys,Anmol, bit her on the hand and started shouting for help, when a man heard him and called residents who rescued the three boys. The children were playing near their locality when the woman took them, promising them to buy them ice-cream.
