Auto majors buoyant as sales pick up

After the initial slump in sales this year,the auto sector is riding high on the festive season and the new brands have registered a spurt in sales in October.

After the initial slump in sales this year,the auto sector is riding high on the festive season and the new brands have registered a spurt in sales in October. Auto Majors like Tata Motors,Maruti Suzuki India,General Motors India and Hyundai Motor India have registered a significant growth in sales last month compared to the sluggish sales in the corresponding month last year.

Tata Motors’ total sales (including exports) of commercial and passenger vehicles in October was 53,404 ,a growth of 34 per cent over 39,729 vehicles sold in October 2008. The company’s domestic sales were 50,552 a 40 per cent growth over 36,168 sold in October last year. The passenger vehicles business reported a total sale and distribution offtake of 22,232. (20,011 Tata + 2,221 Fiat) in the domestic market in October 2009,a 28 per cent increase compared to 17,378. (17,014 Tata + 364 Fiat) in October last year,and the highest this fiscal.

The sales of the Tata Nano were 3,018,Indica sales were 9,64 and the Indigo range recorded sales of 4,899. While,Sumo/Safari range accounted for sales of 2,454,lower by 16 per cent over October last year.

Maruti Suzuki India registered a 32.45 per cent jump in total sales at 85,415 units in October compared to the same period last year. Exports of Maruti rose over two-fold to 13,864 units compared with 5,363 units last year.

The domestic sales grew by 21.01 per cent to 71,551 units in October from 59,127 units in the same month last year,sales of M800,however,declined by 5.53 per cent to 3,124 units compared to the same period last year.

General Motors India has registered a growth of 15 per cent in sales with 7,413 units as against 6,465 units sold in October last year. The October 2009 sales comprise of 4,231 units of the Chevrolet Spark,1,161 units of the Chevrolet Tavera,599 units of Aveo U-Va,337 Units of Aveo,163 units of Chevrolet Optra,110 units of the Chevrolet Captiva and 812 units of Chevrolet Cruze.

While,Hyundai Motor India sold 51,736 units as against 46,596 units in October 2008,registering 11 per cent growth. SkodaAuto India,posted a 98 per cent growth in sales for the month of October 2009 over October 2008.

SkodaAuto India’s total sales for October,2009 stood at 1753 units as against 887 units in October,2008.

Bajaj motorcycles grew 52 per cent in October. The company sold 55,413 Pulsars and 95,139 Discovers. Kawasaki Ninja 250R that was launched on October 7 sold 127 units.

Exports at 84,012 units in October 2009 is the highest ever for Bajaj.
