Assaulted by company staff for theft,man dies 10 days after getting bail
A 48-year-old tempo driver with a private company in Chakan,who was arrested on charges of theft and later granted bail,died on Thursday,reportedly succumbing to the injuries he sustained after the company staff beat him badly.
A 48-year-old tempo driver with a private company in Chakan,who was arrested on charges of theft and later granted bail,died on Thursday,reportedly succumbing to the injuries he sustained after the company staff beat him badly. Chakan police are yet to identify the accused,but a case has been registered against some unidentified employees of the company.
The deceased,Shamrao Rangappa Girgite,a resident of Alandi Road,Yerawada,was working as a tempo driver with Minda Corporation in Chakan. On December 12,he was allegedly caught stealing some goods that were to be transported in the tempo he was driving.
Sushil Kadam,police inspector with Chakan police station,said: Girgite and three other contract labourers with the company allegedly stole 1,946 boxes of electric switches worth Rs 4.25 lakh early on December 12. When a security guard spotted them fleeing with the boxes loaded in the tempo without proper procedure,he nabbed them. Some employees of the company then allegedly beat them up with rubber wires and wooden sticks. Based on the complaint filed by the company,we arrested Girgite and the three others on the same day and produced them in court.
During the court proceedings,Girgite who was suffering from high blood pressure fell unconscious and was sent for medical check up. On December 14,he was granted bail by the court.
Kadam added,Girgite was admitted to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital in Pimpri two days ago and died on Thursday. Girgites son Sachin registered a complaint with us,saying his father has died due to excessive beating by the company employees. Our investigation is on,but we are yet to identify the employees.
Sachin alleged that the police turned a blind eye towards his fathers deteriorating health. The police refused to comment on this.
Vilas Pujari,sub-inspector with Khed police station,is investigating the case.
