All of the above

A child if questioned on career options will reserve all kinds of alternatives from pilot to engine driver and from a teacher to a doctor!

With multi tasking becoming the name of the game, career now has many facets for the talented younger generation

A child if questioned on career options will reserve all kinds of alternatives from pilot to engine driver and from a teacher to a doctor! Try the same with a student and chances are you will hear little else than a software professional or an executive with a MBA degree. However you begin to wonder if a lot of other career avenues have any takers at all, given the fact that most students today want to tread the same path. Many students while selecting a career opt for predictable choices however, there are many more alternative careers, which although are not so common, are still rewarding for those who choose the road less traveled. Sumit Agarwal,a MBA student who plays bass for the pune band Prosody for past five years, says,“I was always inclined towards music and listening to some international bands had its effect on me. It makes me ecstatic and happy. If you like something no one can stop you from achieving what you want. It means a lot to me,a passion while maintaining balance is the minimum thing I can do,” he adds.

With changing times, the outlook towards education has also changed. John Abraham being a MBA student made it to modeling. It is not difficult for students from other professional courses to look at modeling as a stand in career and has lots of young buds in the queue,“I was interested in doing something different since childhood. Striking a balance between studies and alternative career is quite difficult, but not impossible. While attending college from Monday to Friday,I get two days off and during the weekend,I go for my modeling assignments. I have the satisfaction of doing what appealed to me the most ,” says Sumendra Pandey,an engineering student.

Sudhansu Ranjan,a MBA graduate, has a flair for writing and is willing to do both the things together. “ My parents want me to do a job but writing is something very close to me. I don’t know whether I would be a great writer or not but it brings charms to my expression. And I would carry it further,as it can get you some good recognition as well as money,” he says with smile.

Acting is also one of the popular alternative career options today. The field of acting gives lot of name and fame although the competition is tough. However, competition is not a barrier for those who are talented. “There is a lot of scope in this field too where one can prove his or her talent” says Ajay Jaiswal,a BBA student, who is seeing acting as alternative career,“Conventional careers are what the majority chooses and unconventional careers are what the minority goes for. People never stop asking me why I chose acting over computers but I believe it is not about what one can do but it really is about what one likes to do” he quips adding,“If I do not get job with my BBA degree I always have acting to fill in. Prashant Patil, another third year journalism student has done cinematography for around eight films. “Cinematography got to me while I was pursuing my career of journalism. I feel good doing journalism and this at same times as it gives me options. At a young age,if you have an experience to show there is no need to start from the scratch”,he concludes.
