After thrilling chase and exchange of fire, Pune police arrest history sheeter

Acting on a tip-off, the crime branch sleuths launched a search in the Paud area for the accused Wadkar, who was wanted in an armed robbery case lodged at the Sinhagad police station.

Following an adrenaline-fueled chase which saw an exchange of fire, sleuths of the crime branch of Pune city police nabbed two youngsters including a history sheeter on Tuesday.

Police have identified the accused as Ajinkya alias Navnath Nilesh Wadkar (18) and Ketan Suraj Salunke. “Police have seized a country made pistol from the possession of Wadkar, who is a resident of the Janta Vasahat slum near Parvati Hill in Pune,” said assistant commissioner of police (crime) Sunil Tambe.

At around 11 am, cops spotted Wadkar and his aide going on a two wheeler from Kharwade village to Pune city. A police team started chasing them on private two wheelers. Meanwhile, when the cops tried to intercept the accused near Mutha ghat, he allegedly threw his cell phone towards the police team and made a swift U-turn to escape from the spot on his two wheeler.

When the police team tried to intercept him again, he dashed the cops and started running away. But the police continued to chase him. On the Mutha – Bahuli road, he allegedly fired a bullet towards the police team from his country made pistol. In retaliation, police sub inspector Shrikant Chavan of the crime branch fired three bullets at Wadkar.

Police then nabbed Wadkar and his aide Salunke. A fresh offence for attacking the police was lodged against them at Paud police station.

Amitesh Kumar, commissioner of Pune city police, announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for the crime branch team that nabbed the duo.
