After a Dalit outfit presented a list of 19 gambling dens and illegal liquor selling outlets operating in new Sangvi, old Sangvi and Kalewadi areas, city police chief Satyapal Singh has asked the Sangvi police to crackdown on matka operators in its jurisdiction. Singhs orders came at the Janata Durbar at Sanskriti lawns in Sanghvi on Saturday. Additional police commissioner Dhananjay Kamlakar, deputy commissioner of police Mahesh Patil, assistant commissioner of police Maruti Karade were also present at the Durbar organised to enable the residents here to voice their grievances to senior police officers. Home Minister RR Patils had said here last week that the police should clamp down on gambling den operators and public prosecutors should take up cases pertaining to them seriously as these operators are instrumental in wrecking the lives of many from lower socio-economic background. Shiv Sena MP from Maval Gajanan Babar said,Police officials have now become experts at making grand announcements of their achievements, instead of curbing illegal operations. Many such operators have got the blessings of political dadas,so what can the police do? Maruti Dakhle,a Shiv Sena member, said,Sangvi has a booming middle class population of IT professionals and those employed in other industries. The growing illegal liquor and gambling dens are causing nuisance in the area. I have brought this to the notice of the police and if they fail to control these illegal businesses, the Sena will organise an agitation demanding action. At the function,Singh said that the complainants have a right to ask about the investigation of the cases they registered. Hereafter, complainants can meet police officials at the police station every Saturday and get updates on their complaints.
