A peek into e-governance for engineering,management students of Maharashtra

Students,pursuing engineering,management and computer studies,will soon be able to do an internship programme with the ‘Setu’ centres across the state as part of government policy that aims at making e-governance an attractive subject at the level of institutes of higher learning.

Students,pursuing engineering,management and computer studies,will soon be able to do an internship programme with the ‘Setu’ centres across the state as part of government policy that aims at making e-governance an attractive subject at the level of institutes of higher learning.

The Setu centres are citizen facilitation centres set up by public administration at district and taluka level,to offer computerised services such as certificates and licenses.

As per the latest policy decision by the State Directorate of Information Technology (DIT),district and state Setu societies are shouldered with the responsibility to rope in students from reputed engineering and management institutes for internship programmes of maximum of three months.

“Students would be selected based on their profile and interviews to be conducted. Each of these selected interns are expected to work for maximum of three months with the Setu centres,” a senior government official told Newsline on Monday.

Stating that while preference would be given to students from institutes situated in that district,where work is to be done,he said,the students would be paid a stipend of Rs 2,000 per month (for Engineering/MCA students) and Rs 3,000 per month (for MBA) for doing internship with the Setu centres.

The state and district Setu Societies are expected to invite applications for internships from time to time on their respective websites,he said.

It can be recalled that the State Government started its e-governance policy declared through a government resolution dated September 23,2011 has resolved for promoting student internship across various e-governance projects in Maharashtra.

“The state government will create opportunities for short-term Internship (which may be stipend-based) of students with Diploma or Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science,IT in the state government departments in various e-governance projects and initiatives,and an appropriate certificate shall be provided on completion of the same,” Section 13.11 of the state e-governance policy states.

Reacting on the government decision to encourage students for undertaking internship with e-governance projects,Prof Sandeep Meshram,faculty and training and placement officer at the College of Engineering Pune,said the step is highly welcomed as it would give students an exposure to the government sector in the stage of deciding their career ahead. p
