The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) will host a ciné concert, a show that combines cinema with music, of the 1924 silent Film Paris Qui Dort (The Crazy Ray) on October 28 at 7 pm. To be held at the new FTII auditorium on Law College Road, the show will feature a live score by French drummer and composer Stéphane Scharlé.

Entry is free for audience members with mandatory prior registration.

Directed by filmmaker René Clair, the story follows Albert, a night watchman who wakes up to find Paris mysteriously frozen in time. Amid hauntingly still images of the city’s most important landmarks, a few bewildered survivors explore the strange freedom of a city paused in time. Recently restored in 4K by the Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé Foundation, the film’s surreal imagery and social satire remain strikingly relevant.

In his first solo concert, Scharlé will use his innovative Augmented Drum to blend acoustic percussion with electronic soundscapes, giving new rhythm to a century-old masterpiece. Scharlé is the artistic director of Compagnie Tangram, a company which produces shows combining music, cinema, photography, and dance.

The event is presented by the French Institute in India in collaboration with Alliance Française.
