70-yr-old undergoes knee surgery, first to avail of new technology in city

A knee-replacement surgery, which doctors called the first of its kind ‘joint replacement’ effort in Pune, was performed on a 70-year-old man suffering from severe arthritis. The pain and deformity had affected mobility to an extent that he could not even perform his daily activities.

Joint replacement surgeon Dr Mahesh Kulkarni said,“In this new process, the patient’s knee-joint X-rays and MRI scans are carried out here and are then sent to Memphis,USA. Based on the doctor’s expertise and the shape of the knee,a defined set of instruments customised for the concerned patient is engineered in a span of three weeks, after which it is immediately sent to India. This technique is known as the Oxinium Patient Matched Technology.”

“This technology facilitates customised instrumentation for knee replacement that it accurately corrects the patient’s knee alignment, which is most critical for long life of the implant. The patient is monitored if he is fit enough to go ahead with the surgery in those 3 weeks.”

“This customisation not only speeds up the surgery and patient’s post operative recovery but also guarantees much more precise knee alignment (patient match’). Moreover,as compared to the customary cobalt chrome material used for the knee replacement caps, the new Oxinium metal technology significantly reduces long term wear and tear. This in combination with the patient matched technique improves the longevity of the knee replacement surgery,” added Kulkarni. The first patient from Pune to avail this technology was operated upon by Kulkarni along with Dr Nitin Bhagali at Bhagali Hospital,Pune.
