5 kids hurt in Pune as firecrackers cause flare up of sewage gases

Officials said that injuries to two of the five children were serious.

Five children sustained injuries due to a flare up caused by ignition of gases formed in a sewage chamber when some children placed a set off firecrackers on the drainage line in a residential society in Narhe area of Pune.

Officials said that injuries to two of the five children were serious.

The incident took place on Sunday around 5.30 pm in Manajinagar in Narhe on the premises of Gaurang Residency. The injured children are in the age group of eight to 10 years, a police officer said.

“A group of five children from Gaurang Residency in Narhe were setting off firecrackers within the premises of their residencial society. The firecrackers were placed above a drainage line. This led to an ignition of gases formed in the drainage chamber, causing a sudden flare up. As a result, the children gathered nearby sustained burns, ” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Sambhaji Kadam.

“All the injured children are stable, but two of them are serious and require medical treatment. No medico legal case has been reported to the police so far. We are making an appeal to all citizens to exercise caution during Diwali festivities,” DCP Kadam added.
