2nd day in a row, parents storm Board office, claim anomalies in marks

For the second day in a row, angry parents reached the Pune division of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) on Saturday alleging discrepancies in marks scored by their children in Class XII.

For the second day in a row, angry parents reached the Pune division of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) on Saturday alleging discrepancies in marks scored by their children in Class XII.

On Friday, some parents had barged into Pune Division Board chairman Sunil Chauhan’s office alleging discrepancies in marks. The officials had noted down 15 roll numbers and agreed to cross-check the marks. “We checked the papers and looked at their practical marks. There was nothing wrong. We also showed one of the parents the answersheet. I am sure this is the case with everyone. Parents should wait until June 6 when marksheets will be given to check the marks obtained individually in theory and practicals. If they feel something is wrong, they can apply for revaluation,” Chauhan said.

On Saturday, around 200 parents and their wards tried to enter the Pune division building at Shivajinagar but were stopped by police deployed at the entrance . Parents alleged that there was a delay of 21 days in evaluation as junior college teachers were on strike and teachers checking the papers in a hurry may have led to incorrect marks.

Some parents had argued that the marks were not right as their children had scored high in Class X. Teachers said a student who scored well in Class X faring badly in Class XII is not something unlikely. The change of syllabus and pattern may have been reason for the poor results, they said.

Anil Deshmukh,General secretary,Maharashtra State Federation of Junior College Teachers Organisation, said,“It is true that there was a delay in evaluation owing to the strike but it was done properly. Parents can apply for revaluation and see that answersheets were checked taking case all precautions were in place. This time the syllabus was vast and was as per the NCERT pattern. Instead of two papers, paper 1 and 2 in science and mathematics, there was combined papers in these subjects with 70 marks for theory and 30 marks for practicals. This was a load on students and hence, they performed poorly. The pass percentage of the state has increased but the individual marks have come down. There is no problem with the checking,it is just that the students have performed badly.”

The parents demanded a series of measures by the Board which Chauhan said he will forward to the Board. “We want the procedure for admission to degree colleges to be stopped until revaluation results are out. Since Class XII board exam marks are less, the eligibility for admission to various engineering colleges should be based on the entrance exam mark only and not the combined marks. Thirdly, the scanned copy of all answersheets should be put on website so that the students can verify the marks for themselves,” demanded the parents.

Sarjerao Jadhav, chairman of MSBSHSE,said,“There is nothing wrong in the manner in which the HSC answersheets were checked. It is impractical and impossible to put up all the answersheets of 12 lakh students online,as the parents are demanding. Parents should try to understand that there is nothing wrong with the Board results. They should follow the proper channel and wait until June 6 when the marksheets will be given to students. Then they can check for themselves and apply for photcopies of answersheets and get them checked by college teachers. If they feel there is something wrong in the evaluation, they can apply for revaluation and then we will do the needful.”

He further said,“We have taken the roll numbers of 250 students who were protesting on Saturday at the division office. We will try to check their answersheets on priority,” he added.
