Police have seized as many as 147 ATM cards of different banks from the three robbers arrested in the case.
Acting on a tip-off received by inspector Rajesh Gawali of the Rajgad police station, a team laid a trap and intercepted a car moving suspiciously at the Khed Shivapur toll post on Friday.
A suspect, Adil Khan (30), sitting in the car, fled from the spot after he saw the cops. But the police nabbed the other three persons in the car who were identified as Samun Ramzan (36) of Haryana, Nasruddin Khan (30) and Badshah Khan (24) of Uttar Pradesh (UP).
Police seized their car, cash of Rs 50,000 and 147 ATM cards from them. During investigation, it was known the accused had robbed a 56-year-old Madhavrao Jalalwad, a resident of Bhor taluka in Pune district, around 11.25 am on Friday.
Jalalwad lodged an FIR at the Rajgad police station under Section 309 (4) 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Jalalwad told the police that he had gone to an Axis Bank ATM centre at Kondhanpur Phata to withdraw money, when a robber pointed a knife at him and snatched Rs 2,000 from his pocket.
Threatening to kill him, the robber, who was speaking Hindi, asked Jalalwad to go inside the ATM centre and withdraw in front of his accomplices. Accordingly, he withdrew Rs 500 by pressing an ATM pin in front of the robbers.
Jalalwad then left the place, but the robbers played a trickster and took his ATM card with them. Sometime later, they withdrew Rs 50,000 from his bank account by misusing his ATM card, police said.
During interrogation, the arrested robbers admitted to have robbed Jalalwad, police said on Saturday.
Pankaj Deshmukh, Superintendent of Police, Pune Rural, said while three robbers have been arrested, a search is on for their accomplice, who managed to escape.
Deshmukh said a court has remanded the three accused to police custody till January 22 for further investigation.
“We are probing into the 147 ATM cards seized from the accused. All four accused are found to be history-sheeters. They have committed similar offences UP, Bihar and Delhi,” said Deshmukh.
Police said there was no security guard at the ATM centre where the accused allegedly robbed the complainant Jalalwad.
