Four days after the body of a 14-year-old girl was found in a room of a MHADA colony, the police arrested a resident of the same area for allegedly raping and murdering her. The victim went missing on January 8 from near her house in the same building at MHADA colony in Chembur. While the victim stayed on the fourth floor of the building, the 24-year-old accused Nagesh Gholap stayed on the ground floor. On Friday morning, when the victim was on her way to the market,Gholap called her on some pretext and then allegedly raped her and killed her. The girls body was found in room number 9 of the ground floor. The rooms next to it were locked since the families were away on a holiday. During investigation we learnt that the families had given the keys to Gholaps mother, who is the manager of the building. During interrogation,Gholap confessed of having raped and killed the girl, said police inspector S Pasalwar of the RCF police station. Ghalop got access to the keys of the empty rooms. After he took the girl to one of the empty rooms,he pushed her into a water drum and raped her after she lost consciousness. However,to avoid the arrest,he banged the girls head against the floor and killed her. Gholap then wiped the blood stains on the floor and put her body in a gunny sack. He left the body in the bathroom of the room and locked it again to avoid suspicion, said police sub-inspector Sanjay Bhapkar of the RCF police station. The accused had tied the victims hands to avoid the gunny back from toppling. After we began searching for the girl,we questioned Gholap who initially claimed that he saw the girl on her way out but had not seen her after that. He was watching television the whole day and the body was in the bathroom of his neighbouring house, said an officer. However the police said that there were no witnesses who had seen Gholap talking to the girl and that they will have to rely on his confession as the evidence before the magistrate.
