Adil Shaikh, the Mass Media student accused of killing classmate Darshana Panchal, for reportedly causing his girlfriend to break off with him,has been remanded in police custody till September 2. Police said Shaikh, arrested on Thursday, has been giving conflicting accounts. Though Shaikh was arrested redhanded and the weapon recovered from him,we needed his custody to establish the sequence of events and verify if the motive he claims is true, said senior police inspector Maruti Telang from the Bangur Nagar police station. In order to make the prosecution case strong,we need to quiz him about what exactly happened. He is trying his best to mislead us, Telang said. Shaikh,a Malvani resident and a student of Mittal College in Malad, reportedly lured Darshana to an isolated spot at Interface in Malad,on the pretext of seeking her help in passing on a birthday gift to his girlfriend. There he confronted her about her and in a fit of rage, allegedly stabbed her with a skinning knife he had been carrying with him. During preliminary interrogation,Shaikh told investigators he had been in a relationship with a classmate, whom Darshana knew, and she had reportedly told her he was not of a good character. This allegedly caused a rift and his girlfriend broke off ties around two months back, police said.
