Youth dies in Chembur,family alleges police torture

“Sachin had a vada pav stall in the area and would often spend time with his friends till late in the night. I got to know from his friends that he was with them last night and was chatting with three of them below the building where we stay. A police vehicle patrolling the area saw the youths. Suspecting something fishy,the policemen asked them what were they doing so late in the night,”said Sachin’s brother Naresh Khopkar.

When two of the youths ran away,the policemen allegedly vent their ire on Sachin. He fell unconscious due to the blows rained on him. The policemen rushed him to the hospital.

“On Friday morning,we were informed that Sachin was rushed to the Rajawadi Hospital and was declared dead later. We have filed a complaint with the RCF police station and demanded the matter be investigated and action be taken against the erring officers,” Naresh said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Shintre said,“The family’s allegations are false. Our constables saw this youth in an unconscious state by the side of a road in the locality and rushed him to the Rajawadi Hospital. It has also been discovered that Sachin had heart ailment and that he might have dead owing to it. The autopsy reports would prove the allegations false… I have ordered the ACP to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident. Further action will depend on the findings of the inquiry and the autospy report.”
