Three youngsters were swept into the sea on Sunday evening, resulting in the death of two of them while the third managed to swim back to safety, police said. The three had come to the beach separately and were pulled into the sea during high tide.
According to Mahim police senior inspector Sudharkar Shirsat, one of the deceased was identified as Rihan Mandal (12), who had come to Mahim Dargah for Eid with his family before heading to the beach. Mandal went into the sea and was swept away. His family resides in Dharavi, the officer said.
The officer added that along with Mandal, two other youngsters were also swept by the tide. However, one of them managed to swim back to the shore. The police are in the process of identifying the deceased. “He too appears to be around 15 years old and prima facie it seems he is a Kurla resident. However, we do not know his name as yet,” Shirsat said.
