Deepika Parmar, who allegedly killed her one-month-old child at KEM Hospital, was released on bail on Monday. The Sewree fast track court took into consideration her mental instability and granted her bail on humanitarian grounds.
On October 26,Deepikas girl child was found dead in the hospital. According to the police,Parmar had thrown her child out of the bathroom window. On November 22,soon after Parmar was discharged from the hospital, police took her custody and she was sent to Byculla jail. The KEM hospital, where Parmar was under treatment, had treated her for post-partum depression.
The police had secured her custody on three grounds to know the motive,if any other persons were involved in the case and if she was facing charges in any other case. Till date the police has not found any new evidence against her. Parmar was let out on bail on merit, said her advocate Pradeep Havnur. Parmar is charged with Section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child and murder).
While the police had called it murder, the defence claimed that Parmar had no motive to kill her child and was depressed at the time. The murder charge in her case is inapplicable, the defence had argued.
KEM doctors treating Parmar have concluded that she has been mentally unstable and needed medical intervention. In her bail application, the defence had contended that since the treatment is not available in jail, she should be sent to Thane Mental Hospital.
She will be taken to Thane Mental hospital for further treatment. Also, her other child Krishna,a twin of the deceased infant,is around three-months-old and needs her care, said Havnur. Soon after her arrest,Parmar was sent to judicial custody.
