Woman mistaken for fugitive gangster’s wife meets police chief

The family requested Rakesh Maria to help them get tickets for another round-trip to Dubai.

A Borivali resident who was mistaken to be the wife of a fugitive gangster and was detained for more than 24 hours last week, visited Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria at his Crawford Market office along with her family on Monday.

Sources confirmed that the family requested Maria to help them get tickets for another round-trip to Dubai, as the one that they had planned got ruined due to a confusion over her identity.

On Monday night, the woman, along with her husband and their 17-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter had entered the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport to board their flight to Dubai. Instead, they were taken aside and questioned first by the Mumbai police and then by the Mangalore police who had issued a lookout circular (LOC) on her name.

“The family requested that we talk to the airlines company so that they could get tickets for another trip to Dubai. We told them that we would see what we could do,” said a source. When contacted, Maria declined to comment. The woman’s husband also could not be reached.

The Mangalore police had issued a lookout circular (LOC) in 2012, after the fugitive gangster’s wife was suspected to be involved in an extortion case registered with the North Canara police station in Mangalore, and that name matched with the Borivali resident’s name.
