A senior citizen in Juhu who tried to book air tickets for Dubai ended up losing Rs 4.4 lakh to cyber fraud. The fraudsters had replaced the phone number of the ticket booking company Skyscanner with their own number, which they used to cheat people looking to buy air tickets.
The Juhu police registered an FIR and were investigating the matter.
As per the police, when Gita Shenoy (64) looked up air tickets online on Tuesday, she was directed to the Skyscanner website.
She then called up the mobile number given on the site. The person who answered the call claimed to be from Skyscanner and told her to download the remote-access app called Any Desk on her mobile phone.
The app gives third-party control to a device.
The fraudster then told her to give the code that she would receive, following which the former got control of her mobile phone.
The fraudster went on to transfer Rs 4.4 lakh from the elderly woman’s bank account. When she tried calling up the number again, the other person did not answer.
The woman realised that she had been cheated and she approached the police.
Based on her complaint, the police registered an FIR against unidentified people. The police said that in order to trace the fraudsters, they were trying to get information about the bank accounts where the money had been transferred.
The police added that cybercriminals had been using the option that Google provides to change the mobile number of a place online to dupe people.
