The proposed Versova-Virar Sealink, which will be built by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), is likely to be extended till Palghar. Since the sealink was earlier proposed only till Virar, the MMRDA will carry out a pre-feasibility study of the extended portion.
The Authority also plans to build an access-controlled sea link on this stretch, said an official.
The sealink was earlier to be built by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). However, the project was later transferred to the MMRDA.
Currently the MSDRC is building the Bandra-Versova Sealink. It has already constructed the city’s first sealink – connecting Worli and Bandra — which was opened to traffic in 2009.
According to MMRDA officials, the proposed sealink will provide crucial connectivity, facilitating the signal-free movement of commuters, and will also act as a ring road connector with the coastal road, Mumbai Trans Harbour Sealink and Virar Alibaug Corridor.
Meanwhile, the Versova-Virar Sealink project cost has escalated by Rs 8,000 crore. The revised cost is now Rs 40,000 crore while the earlier estimated cost was Rs 32,000 crore. The increase in project cost is due to the appointment of a consultant for studying the access control road, and a dedicated consultant for conducting peer review, among other tasks.
