(PTI/Facebook) Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) leader Prakash Ambedkar on Tuesday invited Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for the Samvidhan Samman Mahasabha to be held in Mumbai on November 25, recalling how he had supported his mother Sonia Gandhi in 1998 when she took charge of the Congress party.
In his letter to Rahul Gandhi, Ambedkar said, “I write to you today to invite you to Vanchit Bahujan Aaghadi’s Samvidhan Samman Mahasabha on Saturday, November 25, at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park in Mumbai. We had submitted the paperwork for permission to the concerned authorities a couple of weeks ago but only got the permission today. We are writing this letter at the very first opportunity available to us after receiving the permission today”.
The VBA is not yet a part of the Opposition’s INDIA bloc and its leaders are alleging that they have been kept out of it purposely. Ambedkar has joined hands with the Shiv Sena (UBT) led by Uddhav Thackeray, however, its alliance with the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Sharad Pawar is yet to be finalised.
Ambedkar said the rally has been organised to celebrate constitutional rights, which would have not been possible without the Constitution of India. “The Mahasabha has been organised to honour and celebrate both the Constitution and India’s founding ideals, which my grandfather, Dr B R Ambedkar, and your great grandfather Shri Jawaharlal Nehru and other founding fathers had envisioned for our country,” he said.
The rally will be held a day before Constitution Day, also known as ‘Samvidhan Divas’, observed every year on November 26 to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution.
Recalling how Bharipan Bahujan Mahasangh—a previous political outfit of Prakash Ambedkar—stood firmly behind former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Ambedkar also took a dig at Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar who had quit the party over the issue of her foreign origins.
