Initial investigations into the murder of former priest Peter Bombacha in Vasai have suggested that he was murdered for personal reasons and that the killer knew him,the police said on Friday.

The body of Bombacha,77,was found lying in a pool of blood, with stab injuries and a pair of scissors sticking out of his mouth,in his house at Vasai over a week ago. The police are yet to make any arrests in the case.

“There have been no arrests as of now but we have acquired some clues in the case and are working on it. However, the angle of our probe cannot be disclosed at this juncture for the fear of compromising the investigation,” Thane (Rural) Superintendent of Police Madhukar Pandey said.

He,however, confirmed that,so far,the enquiries point to personal enmity being the motive behind the murder.

“Many theories had been floated including Bombacha’s resistance to some construction being carried near the chapel and theft of some files from his house. We probed all angles and are confident that the murderer knew Bombacha and killed him out of personal reasons. We are probing further to determine the identity of the killer,” Pandey said.

Bombacha used to run a clinic for alcoholics and for distributing free medicines. He had been living in a flat above a chapel on Bhabola Sadhor Road in Vasai West. His body was discovered after he failed to turn up after being called out by some chapel members. Later, the Vasai police registered a case of murder.
