Former Gujarat Police’s Deputy Inspector General D G Vanzara, who came out of jail in Ahmedabad on February 18 after being granted bail in the Sohrabuddin Shekih encounter case, made his maiden appearance in a Mumbai sessions court Friday as per directions of the Bombay High Court given in September 2014.
Asked to explain his “acche din” comment after coming out of the jail in Ahmedabad, he told The Indian Express, “How else do you expect me to feel after spending eight years in prison? Bure din were those spent behind bars and now that I am out, it feels these are my acche din.”
Asked why he chose the BJP’s pre-election tag-line to describe his elation upon being released from prison, Vanzara said, “The concept of acche din existed before too, and is not new. It was there even when BJP was not in power.”
Vanzara is in Mumbai as the Bombay High Court had imposed restrictions on his entry to Gujarat while granting him bail.

Asked about encounter killings in Gujarat, Vanzara said they were permissible in law.
The HC had asked him remain in Mumbai and report to the trial court at 11 am “sharp” every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. “Should the court be closed on any such Monday, Wednesday and/or Friday, the applicant shall report to the trial court on the next working day,” the HC had said.
The judge had also asked to be present in the court on all the dates fixed for hearing and surrender his passport to the CBI.
Vanzara is yet to get bail in the case relating to the encounter killing of Tulsiram Prajapati, a key witness in the Sohrabuddin encounter case, and the 2004 Ishrat Jahan encounter case.
Vanzara arrived Wednesday evening in Mumbai, where he is living with some relatives in Chembur.
